Many people think of exotic images when it comes to Bali. But for me, it was a break from the mundane office work as I wanted to relax.
But besides being beautiful, the island of Kuta is also fun to be on. Kuta which was once a quite fishing village was originally discovered by the surfers and since then has been their home. Being a playground for young Australians, Kuta also attracts tourists from other regions of the world including families and solo travelers like me.
I took off from Dubai to Bali via Jakarta. But the best way is to take a direct flight to Bali from wherever you are traveling. Changing planes and buying local tickets in Jakarta is not what I would suggest.
1st Evening – My plane landed in Bali and I figured the Denpasar airport (Ngurah Rai International Airport in Tuban) was surrounded by water on all three sides. Now that was a sight to hold on to. Cool breeze swayed my hair and at the same time it started to drizzle. My vacation couldn’t have started in a better way than this. I hailed a cab and witnessed the city around on my way to Kuta. Legian and Seminyak are also similar areas within close distance.
I checked into Kuta Playa which is across the shore with several other hotels in line. After few hours of acclimatizing myself, I went to take a dip in the terrace pool overlooking the ocean. Since my to do list was empty, I thought to myself, ‘how about enjoying the view for starters’. The constant change of colors in sky added the much required drama to my sunset experience. Some view are only to be experience and not be captured.
Later, I hired a bike and went for a ride across town. The feeling of anonymity & aimless wandering left me feeling safer. I interacted with other locals and tourists on my various stops to ask for directions.
2nd Morning – I woke up feeling fresh and the breakfast buffet filled me with energy to explore the island and take long purposeless walks along the beach. I like watching people and browsing through stores.
Kuta Beach Walk was at a fair walking distance from my hotel and its unique design gave me the pleasure of not being in the mall while shopping. The architecture provided natural light, gardens, running water features imitating paddy fields and enough airflow.
Lunch was regular chicken and beer. Beer is something you will find everywhere but do not expect to be drunk on that alone. Bin Tang is more of soda water than beer and I found it in every store. Though I did like the idea of tables outside, so you don’t have to look around for restaurants to have your doze of cooler.
I had a lazy afternoon in the hotel restaurant before hopping on the Jeep for Night Safari at Bali Safari & Marine Park. The affordability makes it very interesting for all tourists. Featuring more than 60 animals, the tour included walk around the park, being with animals up & close, Fire Dance followed by Dinner.
The journey through the jungle watching the Sumatran tiger closely, feeding the elephants made for an unforgettable experience for me.
3rd Morning – As the sun sets, the golden sands and surfing paradise transforms itself into a night club. And I couldn’t leave Bali without having a glance at its liveliest night life. Though for me it was rather morning. Hitting a pub in the wee hours was my first time. Afternoon pubbing is quite on in Bali. But mostly undercover.
Evening – My next stop was Discovery Mall where you will find all first copies of luxury brands. But my main interest was beyond it where the back side of the mall opens towards a beach. I sat in the pool restaurant and ordered my Cosmopolitan to relax for the last evening that I was there. And yes, I did not forget to treat my self for a rejuvenating spa.
My short stay in Bali was blissful and Bali is a place which can be explored in many other ways. Shopping, relaxing, surfing, partying or just how I did; a bit of all. There are still many places of interest which calls for another visit to this wonderful island and I wish to visit them soon.
